Electing Progressive Champions
We’re working to elect progressives to serve at every level of government to take on big-money candidates, far-right Republicans, and the corporate establishment.
Over the past three years, Our Revolution has helped elect more than 180 candidates and fight for progressive change on city councils, county commissions and other democratic bodies. Here’s a few examples of how we’re winning the political revolution. In Somerville, Massachusetts, our local group elected a progressive majority to the city council that is taking on real estate developers. In Maryland, where we helped elect county executives in two of the state’s largest counties — Montgomery County and Baltimore County — we’re advancing proposals for criminal justice reform and clean energy that are a model for statewide action.
The victories of U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar (MN), Rashida Tlaib (MI), and Deb Haaland (NM), upended traditional notions about who is electable in swing states across the nation’s heartland. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) and Ayanna Pressley (MA) dispelled the myth of undefeatable incumbents in the northeast.
And Our Revolution-backed candidates have made enormous headway in seizing control of state legislatures in New York, Pennsylvania, and other states — using their power to enact progressive policies. Our Revolution also has actively supported progressive candidates for Attorneys General and District Attorneys, ensuring that progressive values are reflected in offices tasked with enforcing our nation’s laws. Our candidates have run, and won, in states and cities with some of the widest gaps between the haves and the have-nots, where they’ve reformed sentencing guidelines and eliminated the use of cash bail.
We’ve also been active at the hyperlocal level — supporting candidates for mayor (remember, Bernie started his political career as a mayor) in cities such as Jackson, Mississippi, Birmingham, Alabama, and Clarkston, Georgia. Progressive victories in these deep South towns have led to policies such as guaranteed income, expanded prekindergarten, and increased healthy food options in former food deserts.
With 2020 on the horizon, Our Revolution is gearing up to support an unprecedented slate of progressive candidates campaigning on the issues that matter most to voters as we do the work — one community at a time — to take back our American democracy.
